Slovenia is a relatively new state, a former Yugoslavian republic, which declared it’s independence on 25 June 1991. Slovenia joined NATO on 29 March 2004 and the European Union on 1 May 2004. Since 1 January 2007 the official currency is Euro which replaced Tolar
.

The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana with a beautiful legacy of Roman Emona, renaissance and baroque architecture and the romantic bridges over river Ljubljanica, like the Dragon Bridge. The dragon is also the symbol of Ljubljana.

Kamnik Bled

Beside Ljubljana are many other cities worthy sight-seeing. For example Kamnik, one of the oldest slovenian town, Lake Bled with a small natural island and the church on it, Lake Bohinj inside the Triglav National Park, Piran, an old Mediterranean town by the sea. The highest mountain in Slovenia and the Julian Alps is Triglav meaning “three headed” and describes its shape. Triglav’s shape is also on the Slovenia’s flag. You can climb the mountains and swim in the sea in the same day.

Slovenia’s pride and joy among important individuals are: reformer Primoz Trubar who wrote the first book in slovenian, Baron Janez Vajkard Valvasor with his book The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, France Preseren, a great poet, whose 7th stanza of Zdravljica is now Slovenia’s anthem, architect Jože Plečnik and others.
